Avoidable Red cell transfusion due to Inadequate Investigation of Anaemia (ARIIA):
A Retrospective, Multi-Centre Audit
ARIIA aims to assess the incidence of transfusion in anaemic patients in the acute setting where further investigation could have avoided it.
The practice of transfusing blood before the cause of anaemia is identified exposes patients to the risks associated with blood products and the potential for a delayed or missed diagnosis of, for example, gastrointestinal malignancy.

Lay Summary
Blood transfusions are sometimes given to patients with anaemia before the cause of their low blood count is fully investigated. This can expose patients to unnecessary risks and may delay the diagnosis of serious conditions, such as gastrointestinal cancer. The ARIIA audit reviewed cases across multiple hospitals to see how often transfusions could have been avoided with proper investigation, with the aim of improving patient safety and care.
